biodiversity and the partnership

Partnership working

Partnership working is crucial to conserving biodiversity. There is a wealth of governmental and non-governmental bodies involved in UK nature conservation, and it is important that we co-ordinate a collective approach to biodiversity.  Our responsibility in Suffolk is to make a contribution to the collective effort at a national level, hence the Suffolk Biodiversity Partnership was formed in 1998. This partnership comprises Natural England, Royal Sociey for the Protection of Birds, Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Environment Agency, The Brecks Countryside Project,  Suffolk Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, Suffolk Biological Records Centre, Suffolk County Council, District and Borough Councils and others.

Working together

Suffolk Biodiversity Partnership is working together to:

  • provide a sound base of countywide ecological data.  Suffolk Biological Records Centre provides the essential information necessary to underpin decisions and actions. It also provides a mechanism for monitoring and evaluating progress. It is of national importance that a network of accredited County Biological Records Centres is created, to provide a consistent level of biological information to an approved standard;
  • formulate county level Biodiversity Action Plans that provide an agenda for biodiversity in Suffolk and ensure that our work fits in with the national goals;
  • co-ordinate effective action on the ground by providing better protection of habitats and species. Joint initiatives include the County Wildlife Site Register, influencing land use policy and practice throughout Suffolk as a united partnership and working together to take opportunities to re-create and enhance habitats lost or under threat, and protect those species requiring specific attention due to population declines;
  • encourage and support community groups and other organisations to take practical steps to increase Suffolk's biodiversity by meeting the targets in the Suffolk Biodiversity Action Plans; and
  • inform the people of Suffolk abour biodiversity, advising and involving them so that we can all make a contribution to protecting and enhancing the biological diversity of Suffolk.
